NEWTON WONDER APPLE

Newton Wonder’s parentage is unknown making it wonderfully mysterious, it was originally thought to have originated in King's Newton in the 1860’s, a landlord discovered a sapling growing through the thatch of his inn. He planted it and by 1887 the trees were being sold successfully and received the First Class award from the RHS.

Apple Newton Wonder is a great example of English cooking apples. It gives a smooth puree when cooked and is very large, with a sharp acidic flavour. The Apple Newton Wonder also stores very well and complements perfectly the sharp flavour of Bramley, having a slightly sweeter flavour. Due to its long keeping qualities it is also a popular dessert apple.

The apple bakes to a delicate, fluffy texture and trees bear a heavy crop. The trees have a reputation of being extremely hardy and tolerant of frosts.

Our Apple Newton Wonder bare rooted trees are lifted at the start of the bare root season in November, when the apple trees become dormant, and made available through to March the following year. This period is the ideal time for economical planting. You will however have to wait a year to pick your crop as bare root trees cannot be picked in their first year. For all year round planting why not choose from our selection of container grown apple trees. They do cost more but are older, more established and ready to crop.
