A reliable and heavy cropping plum, a tough plum good for difficult or exposed sites. Bred by Luther Burbank a cross with the two varieties Ponds Seedling and d’Agen. It is also known as the Burbank Plum. Introduced to the UK from California USA around 1893. The fruits are large with a red skin and attractive purple bloom, the flesh is yellow, the flavour not outstanding. Plum Giant Prune was once grown commercially in the UK as it is a free stone style plum making it much easier to use for jams and chutneys.
Our Plum Giant Prune bare rooted trees are lifted at the start of the bare root season in November, when the plum trees become dormant, and made available through to March the following year. This period is the ideal time for economical planting. You will however have to wait a year to pick your crop as bare root trees cannot be picked in their first year. For all year round planting why not choose from our selection of container grown plum trees. They do cost more but are older, more established and ready to crop.
