This very rare Oak tree is known as the Chestnut leaf Oak which from a distance looks very similar to the large toothed leafs of the Sweet Chestnut. Makes ultimately a medium sized to large tree.A great tree to fool your friends with who will not believe you when you tell them it’s an Oak.
Quercus Castaneifolia is native to the mountains of the Caucasus and Iran. When planted in the UK it is a perfectly hardy tree and is similar in growth to the Turkey Oak including the mossy cups which hold the acorns.
We have a tree planted in the arboretum here at Botanica which is now around 25 years old and has achieved about 5m in height.
