Granny Smith Apple

A well known apple of the supermarket shelf. Granny Smith apples are instantly recognizable with their bright green coloured skin. Supposedly discovered by a Mrs Maria Smith growing as a seedling on a rubbish tip in Australia around 1860s.

The fruits are large with a red skin and attractive purple bloom, the flesh is yellow, the flavour not outstanding. Plum Giant Prune was once grown commercially in the UK as it is a free stone style plum making it much easier to use for jams and chutneys.

Norfolk Beefing Apple

The apples from the Norfolk Beefing are large and develop a purple flush to their green skin as they ripen. The Apple Norfolk Beefing will retain its round shape once cooked and can therefore be used in culinary decoration if it survives that long, they are delicious. It was sold in Norwich by bakers as an after dinner sweetmeat.

Chivers Delight produces an attractive medium sized late apple. Golden skinned with red flush and stripes on one side. Good crops of round, sweet, honeyed flavoured juicy fruit with a nice crunch to it. Bred in 1920 by Stephen Chivers, one of the famous Chivers jams and preserves family of Histon, Cambridgeshire. Stores well keeping its texture and crispness. An all round easy to grow and first rate apple that should be better known.

Leeders Perfection is a dual purpose apple of medium to large size with yellow skin and broken red stripes. When cooked keeps it shape well, with a sweet spicy flavour. Moderately disease free and easy to grow.

Eating a Tydemans Early Worcester apple straight from the tree has to be one of the pleasures of the early summer apple harvest, good heavy crops of bright crimson red fruits. Crunchy juicy flesh with a delicious sweet taste of strawberry.
