ASPARAGUS CONNOVER'S COLOSSAL
Asparagus Connovers Colossal is an excellent variety which produces bright green spears and deep purple tips. The crowns of the asparagus are best planted between March and May which will allow you to cut a few small spears next year with more following the year after.
The asparagus Connovers Colossal has been awarded the gardeners merit by the RHS which is proof of how well it is recognised in the gardeners world. Once planted the crowns require full sun but they are quite a hardy plant.
The asparagus requires a little preparation before planting, dig thoroughly through the soil taking out all the weeds and incorporate a good, natural compost or planting material to give impoverished soils a boost. When planting it is best to dig a trench 25cm wide and deep, forking over the bottom of the trench and incorporating some more of the natural compost. Allow a trench to be formed down the middle approximately 10cm high and sit the crowns on the top spreading the roots out as you go. Allow 50 cm between each plant.
