COX ORANGE PIPPIN APPLE

Cox’s Orange Pippin is the original apple Cox that has spawned so many variations that have that famous ‘Cox’ taste. Originally grown by a Mr Richard in Buckinghamshire around 1825. The parentage of the original Cox apple is unknown but the apple Ribston Pippin is regarded as probable. It quickly became a firm favourite during the Victorian times with centres of Edit Edit Production in the Vale of Evesham as well as Kent. A classic good looking apple with crisp flesh and bright red and carmine streaks over deep yellow green skin but it is its flavour that makes Cox apples stand out. Strongly aromatic with flavour hints of cherry, pear, mango, melon and much more. Probably best eaten within a few weeks of picking as flavour can diminish on keeping.

Not an easy or reliable apple to grow but if you are prepared to give it care and site it well, then worth the effort. An interesting quirk with a true Cox Orange Pippin apple is when ripe apples are shaken, the seeds make a rattling sound as they are more or less ’free’ inside the core

Our Apple Cox’s Orange Pippin bare rooted trees are lifted at the start of the bare root season in November, when the apple trees become dormant, and made available through to March the following year. This period is the ideal time for economical planting. You will however have to wait a year to pick your crop as bare root trees cannot be picked in their first year. For all year round planting why not choose from our selection of container grown apple trees. They do cost more but are older, more established and ready to crop.

Available in economy and premium selection

Economy - rooted into its pot but a further season before moving up a pot size.
Premium - more growth in its pot. More mature than Economy
