JAMES GRIEVE APPLE
James Grieve is an old variety, which produces good crops of medium sized yellow skinned all-purpose fruit with an attractive striped red flush. Tends to bruise easily so supermarkets do not stock it, which is a shame as it has an excellent flavour very intense and sharp early in the season when it makes a good cooker, soon mellowing to make a superb eater with truly excellent flavour. Very, very juicy so a good variety for making your own apple juice. Raised in Edinburgh around1893 and the parent of a number of later and more modern varieties
Our Apple James Grieve bare rooted trees are lifted at the start of the bare root season in November, when the apple trees become dormant, and made available through to March the following year. This period is the ideal time for economical planting. You will however have to wait a year to pick your crop as bare root trees cannot be picked in their first year. For all year round planting why not choose from our selection of container grown apple trees. They do cost more but are older, more established and ready to crop.
Available in economy and premium selection
Economy - rooted into its pot but a further season before moving up a pot size.
Premium - more growth in its pot. More mature than Economy
