AKEBIA QUINATA AMETHYST
This twining semi evergreen climber is great for most locations being tolerant of either sun or shade. Akebia Quinata Amethyst has lovely small vanilla scented flowers in spring which when they first appear are a light coral pink and later age to a amethyst purple, hence its name of Akebia Quinata Amethyst. Another unusual aspect of Akebia’s is the fact that they have both male and female flowers on the same racemes, you can see the difference as the female flowers are more pink than the male ones. During late summer strange looking sausage shaped attractive mauve coloured fruits can be produced if the weather is right.
The lush semi evergreen foliage is perfect for covering walls or fences. The twining nature of these climbers means that for best results you can train this Akebia on wires or even let it go into a hedge where it will support itself and find its own way.
